La Escuelita Tutoring Center
La Escuelita Hispanic Tutoring Center began in November of 1981 with 28 students and 13 tutors.  Since then we have grown to over 70 students, 26 volunteer tutors, and three paid staff members!  Our preschool program (started in January, 1998) is the only bilingual preschool in Muscatine.

What We Offer

La Escuelita serves children from infants to middle school, and also assists parents when the need arises. Our primary emphasis is on English language skills: speaking, listening, reading, writing, and vocabulary. During the summer (usually in June) we offer enrichment activities. These have included visiting museums, camera workshops, cooking workshops, going to the circus, quilting workshops, "creek stomping" in the country, and nature walks.

Our Preschool served over 40 children last year.  Beginning this fall, all preschoolers will attend four days a week. Preschoolers whose parents are not enrolled in English as a Second Language (described below) are picked up at home and returned after school. This program is free to parents.

School-age children also receive help with math and other academic subjects. These students come one afternoon a week for 1 1/2 hours. They are picked up from school and returned home at the end of their session. Our program served over 40 students last year. It is also free to parents!

Become a Volunteer Tutor!
Our goal is to have one tutor for each school-age student, though sometimes a tutor will have two students. Volunteers range from middle school students to retired persons. Most volunteers come once a week. Senior high student can receive up to one high school credit hour by tutoring a hundred hours. The main requirements for a tutor are the ability to carry out a lesson plan, some patience, and the willingness to accept and encourage a child.
